Paint fumes assaulted Sasuke Uchiha's senses as soon as he walked through the door. He grimaced; he almost forgot his girlfriend was painting the bedroom today. Spring cleaning, she said with exuberance. She told him this morning that she was going to start with the bedroom, but Sasuke was half-asleep at the time and didn't pay much attention to her.

'Ah, if I had known, I would've stayed out longer,' he thought as he took off his shoes and placed them by the door. 'I can't stand the smell of paint fumes; they give me headaches.'

"Sasuke? Is that you?"

Sasuke turned around and his girlfriend, Hinata Hyuuga, poked her head out of the bedroom, her pale eyes regarding him curiously. A smile replaced the indifferent pout on her lips. "Welcome home, Sasuke."

Sasuke returned the smile despite his slight discomfort. He could already feel a headache coming on. "How's the painting going? Are you almost done?"

"Um…not quite. I-I was just about to apply the second coat of paint w-when you came home."

Sasuke tried not to let his disappointment show. Instead, he attempted to persuade her out of troublesome task. "Is a second coat needed? I don't think you should be exposed to paint fumes for long periods of time."

"Sasuke, I've been painting all day. I-I'm sure I'll be fine," she reassured, adjusting the bandanna so it fit more securely around her head, keeping her dark hair out of her face. Sasuke noticed some white specks on her face, neck and hands.

"You're painting the room…white?" Sasuke tilted his head to the side, uncertain with his girlfriend's choice of paint color. "Isn't that a bit too…plain?"

Hinata shook her head, the smile on her lips still present, "Why don't you come and take a look b-before making snap decisions, Sasuke?"

'And be exposed to more paint fumes? You're kidding, right?' his right eyebrow twitched slightly at the suggestion. Reluctantly, he walked up to Hinata, pausing when he reached the doorway.

It was…VERY bright. His dark eyes squinted, trying to adjust to the monochromatic color. Gray tarps covered the hardwood floor, and strips of tape were taped around the windowpanes, protecting them from being stained by paint. When his eyes finally got used to it, he looked over at Hinata with a peevish expression on his face.

"What do you t-think, Sasuke?"

"It's a little too bright for my tastes."

"That's to be expected," Hinata murmured softly as she touched her fingertips to Sasuke's cheek. "You've been wandering around in the dark for a long time. Your eyes are used to seeing the color black, not white."

Sasuke's eyes widened a fraction, the shape of her words slowly clarifying. He didn't know what to say. He could only stare at Hinata, at her smile, at the specks of white paint on her cheeks.

"I…I figured…you could use some brightness in your everyday life, so I chose white," she moved away from Sasuke and into the bedroom. She bent down and picked up her paint roller. "Do you w-want to help, Sasuke?"

Arms wrapped around her waist and light kisses were planted on her neck, eliciting a yelp from Hinata. "Y-you're going to get paint on you if you keep that up."

"Ah, it doesn't matter," a smirk played on his lips. He could feel a slight coolness on his cheek, nose and wrists, but he ignored it. He knew it was paint. "I'll get used to it."
